Tobacco Farm

*Tobacco Pack House"
Many years ago, the Sherron family used the "pack house" to store tobacco leaves which had been "cured" by heat. After harvesting the tobacco, it was cured in the tall cinder block barns (adjacent to the pack house) in preparation for taking the tobacco to market. After curing, it was moved to the "pack house" where the leaves were "graded" or sorted into piles according to size, color and condition. At this point, the graded leaves were bundled into handfuls (called "hands") and hung in the "ordering pit". The "ordering pit" provided the moisture which the "hands" needed to absorb to soften them (or bring them " into order"), so they could be handled without crumbling, and be more attractive to the buyers. After all these steps, the farmer was finally ready to sell his tobacco.
